Parking project awaits govt approval as Margao’s traffic mess worsens

Controversial proposal of including a restaurant on top floor left out of revised plan; ground floor allocated for 137 two-wheelers and the remaining four floors for 70 four-wheelers, with the fifth floor remaining unused

MARGAO: The revised plan for the multi-level parking project in Margao is still awaiting administrative approval from the government, prompting citizens to demand swift action to address the increasing traffic problems in the commercial hub of Margao.

According to reliable sources, the revised plan does not include the previously discussed idea of incorporating a restaurant on the top floor of the building.

“The revised plan has been forwarded to the Directorate of Municipal Administration, and we are awaiting government approval,” sources confirmed.

The initial proposal for a restaurant atop the parking structure had faced strong objections from citizens and civic officials, as it would have reduced parking space for the public, contradicting the project’s primary objective.

Previously, the Margao Municipal Council struggled to attract contractors for the project, resulting in delays and the file lying abandoned.

The revised plan allocates the ground floor for 137 two-wheelers and the remaining four floors for 70 four-wheelers, with the fifth floor remaining unused.

After approval from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority, the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) is set to oversee the project’s completion, pending administrative approval from the government. Vivek Naik, a Margao resident, urged government authorities to prioritise the project, citing worsening traffic congestion in the town.

“The government authorities including the Margao Municipal Council should have shown more interest and seriousness towards this project so that it sees the light of the day. One can witness total traffic mess in the city, which lacks dedicated and essential parking slots,” he said.

Savio Rodrigues, a frequent visitor to Margao, echoed similar concerns, highlighting the struggle to find parking in the bustling city. “With Margao being a hub of business activities, it is the high time the civic body and the government fulfil the demand of having a multi-level parking project at the earliest. We have been hearing about this project for the last several years and yet the proposed plan is awaiting approval from the government,” said Rodrigues.
