CANACONA: After being notified four months ago, the signboards highlighting all 21 parking and two no-parking zones at Chaudi have finally been notified.
Welcoming the move, motorists and residents said the signboards will help curb traffic indiscipline in the town.
Chaudi town has often been in the news for traffic snarls, especially since commercial activities take place within a radius of barely half a kilometre. To make matters worse, the NH-17 highway passes through Chaudi, leaving little or no scope for additional space.
Traffic signboards have been erected for four-wheeler parking lots for general public at Martin’s Arcade, Devyani Raikar Bldg, Royal Bldg and Mangalvan Bldg, an open area in front of Royal building, Mangalawan building, in front of Goa Bhagyatdar, IDSMT building, opposite the municipal garden and at the old bus stand.
The two-wheeler parking signboards have been installed in front and between Martins Arcade and Devyani Raikar buildings, in front of Hotel Garuda, SBI, Prabhu Desai Bldg, front and left of Goa Bhagyatdar Bldg, municipal bldg, Prabhu Bldg, open space on the left of Mohan Vernekar Bldg and open space at old bus stand.
Likewise, a parking for carriage rickshaws and the open space in front of Mohan Vernekar building facing Goa Bhagyatdar have been earmarked, while some open space at bus stand has been allotted for parking of auto rickshaws, tempo/pickup and motorcycle taxi stand.
The no-parking zones are the areas on both the sides of the road, which is the NH-17 from Martins Arcade to KTC bus stand and both sides of the road (leading from Chaudi to Ponsulem) from Prabhu bldg to IDSMT Project/Municipality building.
CMC Chairperson Mahadev Dessai expressed satisfaction and remarked, “With the installation of traffic signboards, the present arrangements will by and large suffice the present needs.”
Meanwhile, residents blamed some business establishments for treating open space in front and across their establishments as their private property and securing it with gates.
Citing one such instance, a parking signage has been put up in front and left of Goa Bhagyatdar bldg at Chaudi. However, the Society, which operates a super market counter, has put up a gate and has displayed another board with a ‘no-parking’ signage.
