Parrikar: BJP to adopt one-MLA-one-post policy

No MLA will get two corporations says Chief Minister; Hints that panchayat polls will not be held on party lines

PANJIM: The Manohar Parikar-led government will adopt a one-MLA-one-post policy while appointing its MLAs to head different Corporations. The process to select the Chairpersons for the corporations has begun.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said each MLA will be given one corporation only. “The Corporations for various legislators are being finalised, based on their need, flavour and liking. There won’t be two Corporations to any MLA. Each will get one,” he said.
The government has kept under wraps the date of the cabinet expansion and also who will be inducted into the cabinet. Speculation is that new entrant to the BJP Vishwajit Rane and Mauvin Godinho will be the new ministers. Both were formerly with the Congress but have since joined BJP. While Godinho won from Dabolim constituency, Rane is not an MLA having resigned from the Assembly soon after taking oath as MLA.
Speaking on the BJP’s poor performance in the elections and forming the government, Parrikar reiterated his ‘respect for the people’s mandate’.
“I respect people’s mandate though I have personal feelings. People gave a fractured mandate because we probably failed to make the people understand that they have to vote for a political setup in a State unlike in panchayat elections. While we said BJP gave a good government, there were issues at the local level that impacted us,” he said hinting at some defeated candidates’ wrong attitude towards the people leading to their debacle.
He added, “Whether we think as a State or as individual constituency, we were not able to push the concept of one-party government. We then consulted other parties (and Independents) and formed the government.”
On panchayat elections expected in May, the CM said it would be ‘a party-less election. Candidates will be decided at local level’.
