MARGAO: Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado on Wednesday said the government led by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has proposed to make Goa a new educational hub in the country with an eye on IIT’s, IIM’s, AIIMS et al.
Addressing the Goa Revolution Day function organised at the historic Lohia Maidan at Margao, Avertano said the government has initiated efforts to increase the pace of development and improve the quality of life of all the people with a proposal of construction of bridges across Mandovi and Zuari.
He said the induction of North Goa MP Sripad Naik in the Council of Ministers as Minister for Tourism and Culture will help the state government to address many important issues, boost tourism activity, accelerate the pace of development and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Goa.
“Goa is a top tourist destination in the world. Important issues which are immediate for the growth and development of the State with thrust on development of infrastructure in the state will also be dealt with in co-operation with the Union government”, he said, while paying respects to the freedom fighters who had sacrificed their lives towards the cause of liberation.
Freedom fighter Adv Gilman Fernandes recalled the freedom struggle of the people of Cuncolim since the 16th century till Goa achieved freedom i 1961.
Former Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat, MPs Narendra Sawaikar and Shantaram Niak, South Goa ZP Chairperson Nelly Rodrigues, MMC Chairperson Gonsaco Rodrigues, district collector Mihir Vardhan, district police chief Vijai Singh, freedom fighters, students and citizens attended the function.
MP Sripad said that Goa is a top tourist destination in the world. Therefore, issues related to the growth and development of the State with thrust on infrastructure will also be dealt with in cooperation with the Union government
