Parrikar’s latest U-turn is over retirement plans

On Sunday says he’s thinking of retiring, on Monday changes his statement; says there is question mark over finding people with leadership qualities in a small state

PANJIM: A day after hinting at retiring from politics, former chief minister and present Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar took yet another U-turn stating he never meant to say that.
Taking to the social media to clarify his stand, Parrikar said, “My correct statement was – at the age of 60, normally people think of retirement and perhaps I would have also.”
He further said “But I had to take bigger responsibilities at Centre and I assure you that I will come back only after finishing the task I am given.”
On Sunday the Defence minister, speaking at a private function had hinted at retiring from politics, while also admitting to a crisis of credible leadership in Goa.
News agencies quoted Parrikar as saying, “After 60 (years), one has to think about retirement. I turn 60 on 13 December, therefore I had started thinking about retirement two-three years back. I have to intensify that, therefore, I don’t feel inclined to take up big responsibilities.”
“Finally, there is a question mark over the possibility of finding people with leadership qualities in a small state. But one thing I will say, my attention will be on Goa. And if the government in Goa goes on a wrong path, then I will bring it back on track. I can give this guarantee to Goans,” news reports quoted Parrikar as having said.
The media, as well as social activists, have targeted Parrikar as he is seen more in Goa than in Delhi and over his statements on Sunday that his affair with Goa is never ending.
BJP State Unit President Vinay Tendulkar, while reacting to the statements, said, “I feel he should be there for at least ten more years. He should wait till 70. We need him for the country and the party.”
He added, “Parrikar had expressed similar views in past too but the party had convinced him to rethink. We told him earlier too and also last time we had requested him not to take such a decision. The party wants him,” he said.
BJP Goa spokesman Dr Wilfred Mesquita said, “Parrikar is too young to retire. In this country it is too early to retire at 60. Even government servants and judges or university teachers don’t want to retire at 60. Why should Parrikar retire at this age?”
Asked whether the statements meant he is hinting at returning to Goa, Mesquita said, “It depends on him and the party. If the high command sends him he has to come. But yes he would be welcome in Goa.”
