VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC,) with the help of State machinery and heavy police protection, removed the partitions and tarpaulin surrounding the temporary religious shed at Headland Sada on Monday.
Though the residents had warned about serious law and order problem, the MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes assured residents that he would not demolish the temporary shed but would only remove the partitions and tarpaulin surrounding the shed.
The residents subsequently, allowed MMC to remove partitions and tarpaulin and also extended their cooperation.
Speaking to media after removing the partitions and tarpaulin Fernandes said only partitions and tarpaulin surrounding the shed was removed so that the shed was visible from all sides, as we had received complaints in writing from Deputy Collector about illegal activities taking place there.
Fernandes affirmed that on inspection during the period no illegal activities were taking place under the shed.
Councillor Murari Bandekar claimed that he along with other MMC councillors will raise the issue in the forthcoming Council meeting as MLA Milind Naik was targeting those who worked against him in last assembly polls.
Speaking on behalf of residents, Balan Chodankar said Naik had become a demolition man. He first got houses of Baina residents demolished and now he has been targeting residents from Headland Sada.
He also claimed that since the authorities were complying with their duties the residents extended their support and no law and order problem reported.
Refuting the allegations, the MLA reiterated that he was not against the temporary shed or religious activities but was against illegal activities taking place under the shed and thus he had raised the issue after which the partitions and tarpaulin surrounding to the shed was removed.
Naik said his fight to stop illegal activities in his constituency and would continue even in future.
