Parts of Mormugao taluka reeling under water shortage

VASCO: Many parts of Mormugao taluka are facing acute water shortage since power was shut down in entire South Goa on Sunday by the electricity department for annual maintenance.

The areas which are experiencing major water crisis are Sada, Baina, Mangor Hill, Vaddem and New Vaddem while, other areas are also receiving less water for the last three days.

The residents said that though there was facing water scarcity for a long time the situation has worsened since Sunday as taps have run dry.

However, PWD authorities said that the water supply will be normalised in a day or two. PWD assistant engineer Naresh Painginkar said that both the water supply plants were closed on Sunday due to the power shut down in the South Goa district. But after power was restored, PWD started its pumps but were hit by another power failure for more than three hours in both the plants at Selaulim on Monday, thereby precipitating the crisis. He said water supply to all the affected areas will be restored as soon as the Mormugao taluka was at the tail end of the Selaulim dam water supply.

Painginkar said that the people receive low pressure water supply only when the water in the reservoirs is low. This situation arose on Monday when the PWD had to stop water supply due to sudden power failure.

He said that the PWD had made alternate arrangements to supply water to the residents through tankers.
