PANJIM: Residents of Patto-Panjim demanded that the city gutter in front of Saibaba Temple, Patto be excavated and cleaned before monsoon.

Pointing out at the open stretch of gutter, Nelson Gonsalves, a resident from Patto demanded that MLA of Panjim Constituency Babush Monserrate should look into the matter and take the necessary action by directing the concerned authorities to do the needful.

According to Domnic Araujo, another Patto resident, the drainage gutter was excavated by the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) four months ago.

“The gutter, which acts as a main outlet to the waste water from lodgings and other hotels, is now flooded with garbage, liquor cans, plastic junk and other waste. The clogged gutter which holds a plenty of stagnant sewage water has now become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This will give rise to water-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue,” Araujo said.

“The stink of this gutter is unbearable. During late evening it becomes difficult for the tourists and the locals alike to walk along the street due to the absence of streetlights. The open gutters also pose danger to the pedestrians,” Araujo added.

Gonsalves said, “They had complained multiple times to the Commissioner and Mayor of CCP but in vain.

It may be recalled that more than a month ago, the CCP municipal engineer had claimed that the CCP has completed around 80 per cent of the pre-monsoon work including disilting and excavation of gutters in the State capital city and that the rest 20 per cent is expected to be completed by the end of the same month.
