Pay licence fees, or risk being shut down, Margao civic body warns traders

As part of the council's tax recovery exercise, a survey is underway to assess if commercial establishments and residences are up-to-date on their tax payments

MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar urged commercial establishments located in the jurisdiction of the civic body to complete the payments and other formalities with their respective trade licences, failing which he warned they would have to face strict consequences.

Shirodkar made this comment while speaking to media persons after a special council meeting that was held on Friday.

The chairperson said that as part of the tax recovery exercise, a survey is underway to assess such commercial establishments.

He added that the survey is also checking if residential places have been paying house tax.

He also stated that the council will not hesitate to seal establishments that have not paid for or obtained their trade licence or are found to be flouting the law.

Earlier, at the special council meeting, decisions were taken regarding the ongoing tender process for the door-to-door waste collection contract and the market sopo fee collection contract.

Given that the election code of conduct is approaching, the Council decided to seek permission from the Election Commission if any issue arose with the tender process for the door-to-door waste collection contract.

Shirodkar also added that it was decided to change the structure of payment for the sopo contract given that, for the last three times, the tender turned out to be unsuccessful.
