PORVORIM: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has stated that physical education teachers are more important than subject teachers as they are instrumental in making students fit and healthy citizens. He also stated that incompetent PE teachers are a loss not only to educational institutions, but also to society.
He was speaking at an award function for PE teachers organized by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs at the Secretariat on Wednesday. He gave away the ‘Best PE Teachers Awards’ to Carol Fernandes Gomes from Rosary High School, Dona Paula and Luis Vaz from Kamakshi Higher Secondary School for their work in 2014-15.
Parsekar also urged educational institutes to realize the importance of sports in the lives of students. He added, “PE teachers teach students that winning isn’t everything and losing can be a learning experience. They teach them the importance of team spirit. It is for this reason PE teachers need to be motivated by giving them awards.”
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Ramesh Tawadkar stated that Goa has the best sports infrastructure in the country and the State government has been offering every facility to the youth to showcase their talents in sports.
Incidentally, the government has decided to restart the prestigious ‘Jivbadada Kerkar’ awards this year. The screening process has already begun and the names of the awardees will be announced shortly.
