Pednekars protesting against fatal accident face brute force of the cops

Cases filed for unlawful assembly and obstructing police; many accused are grassroots activists who have fought for the protection of land rights of farmers

PERNEM: Protesters alleged that they are being victimised by the men in khaki as Pernem Police registered a first information report (FIR) against 10 residents of Pernem and another 200 ‘unknown’ persons for allegedly forming an unlawful assembly, rioting and obstructing the cops and fire personnel from entering the fatal accident site at Sukekolan, Dhargalim to extinguish the blaze after two cranes were set on fire by a mob.

The fatal accident was reported at Sukekolan, Dhargalim on Friday.

The death of a person reported in the accident at Dhargalim shows the intense discontent brewing in the hearts of Pednekars at the spate of accidents on this Mopa link road mainly by trucks carrying construction material. The fatal accident was just a reason for a grudge against the government system and contractors.

The FIR was registered after a State complaint was lodged against 10 persons, all residents of Pernem along with 150 to 200 others, who formed an unlawful assembly and restrained and obstructed the police staff while doing their lawful duty and also obstructed shifting of the body of the deceased from the accident spot for carrying out further formalities.

The offence stands registered under Sections 143, 145, 147, 341, 186 and 435 read with Section 149 of the IPC.

The offence has been registered against Sandip Kambli, Pradip Kambli, Kishore Kambli and Sharad Arolkar, all residents of Nagzar, Suresh Varak and Siddesh Varak, both residents of Casarvarnem, Rohan Sarmalkar, a resident of Tulskarwadi-Nagzar, Sainath Bhodji, a resident of Vazari, Sunil Naik, a resident of Hasapur and Sushil Patekar, a resident of Dhargalim along with 200 other accused.
