PONDA: Vishwasrao Sawanth from Rumad Pele in Bicholim taluka on Thursday sat on indefinite hunger strike at Bhamai Pale against illegal sand extraction and illegal dumping of sand near government primary school.
Sawanth alleged that the dumping of sand near government primary school was causing dust pollution in the area.
He said that around 100 labourers engaged in illegal sand extraction have been defecating in the open thereby causing hardship to the locals. He said that earlier he had written letters to the Bicholim police inspector, the deputy collector and the local panchayat demanding that the illegal sand extraction be stopped.
He claimed that since he was opposing illegal sand extraction at Bhamai, there was danger to his life from the sand mafia.
He threatened to commit suicide at the Goa Legislative Assembly complex if no action is taken against the illegal sand extraction. “If no action is taken against the illegal sand extraction within eight days from today, I will commit suicide the very next day at the Assembly Complex,” he threatened.
