People are supreme: Guv urges elected representatives to reach out to citizens

The Governor also visited the Patriarchal Seminary at Rachol where the Rector of the Seminary Rev Fr Alexio Menezes welcomed the Governor.

MARGAO: In order to ensure that all the genuine issues at the panchayat level are put forth before the government, Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai appealed to elected representatives to approach and interact with the people stating that ‘people are supreme’. 

As part of ‘Goa Sampurna Yatra’, the Governor on Thursday toured Curtorim and Cuncolim constituencies and interacted with the representatives of the panchayat bodies of Paroda, Cuncolim, Macasana, Chandor, Cavorim, Guirdolim and Rachol. 

In his address at a function held at Raia Panchayat Hall, he assured that Raj Bhavan will work hard for the betterment of the people of Goa. 

He said, “Representations presented by all the Panchayats on occasion will be studied, discussed and the genuine issues and grievances will be resolved with maximum efforts and if required, will be placed before the State and Union Government.” 

Stating that the visits to villages across the State have apprised him of many things the Governor stressed on Mahatma Gandhi Gram Swarajya Mission. 

“Government is elected by the people with their mandate while the Governor is a nominated post,” said the Governor.  The Constitution is committed to the people of India, especially villages, he remarked. The Governor also visited the Chieftains Memorial at Cuncolim and paid homage to the martyrs and visited Menezes Braganza’s house in Chandor.

Cuncolim MLA and Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao said that he is privileged to welcome the Governor in this historic Chandor village which was once the capital of Kadamba Dynasty. He thanked the Governor for paying respect and homage to the Chieftains of the Cuncolim Revolt.

Yuri said that a health center in Cuncolim constituency is the top most priority. 

“The village of Chandor needs to be promoted under Heritage Tourism. The local woodcraft of Chitari’s in Demani needs to be promoted with Government support. The underground power cabling work needs to be undertaken on topmost priority,” he added.

The Governor distributed financial aid of Rs. 25,000 each to 11 dialysis and 7 cancer patients from the Raj Bhavan Discretionary Fund and said that the office of the Raj Bhavan was committed to extending help to those in need. 

Curtorim MLA Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco, Camurlim Sarpanch Basillio Fernandes and Rachol Sarpanch Joseph Vaz also spoke on the occasion. Zilla panchayat members Domnic Gaonkar and Mishelle Rebello, Mihir Vardhan IAS Retd, Secretary to Governor, besides other government officials were also present at the function.
