People need to be sensitive to issues of soldiers: Parrikar

PANJIM: Celebrating Raksha Bandhan in the State on Saturday, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar called for people to be sensitive to issues of soldiers and to use the occasion to remember the troubles the soldiers go through to protect the country.

He also announced the Centre’s plans to introduce a ‘Know your Border’ programme for school children to help them understand the role played by soldiers. and the conditions in which they work.
Speaking to hundreds of children at the ‘One Rakhi for Jawan’ programme, the minister said, “The soldiers that are posted on the borders and working with the Army or Navy, are working under extreme weather conditions. They are posted for months and sometimes years and it’s not easy to understand what they go through.”
He also said, “There are plans of introducing the ‘Know your Border’ programme for children where they will be asked to spend a few days at the border. The reason for this is so the younger generation understands what is actually happening at the border and the situations our soldiers have to deal with.”
Also speaking at the event Speaker Rajendra Arlekar said the feeling of patriotism was lacking in Goa owing to the Portuguese that existed in the past.
“There is no form of patriotism in the State and the only legacy we have is the one that the Portuguese left for us. It is moments like these (Raksha Bandhan) that seek to promote the Indian culture and we should make it only about a brother protecting his sister but also for a citizen protecting everyone else,” said Arlekar.
