Addressing a joint conference, both the Goa PRI and the Salcete Sarpanchas Forum called upon the people to unite and reject candidates contesting on party banners. They said that people should vote for people who believe in grassroots democracy and independence.
Salcete Sarpanchas Forum President Xavier Fernandes said the government had gone ahead with the ZP election on party lines despite an outcry from a wide section of Goa. “The government has taken an anti-people stand in bringing in laws and pushing it onto the residents with or without consent. Democracy is at threat and in this situation the people of Goa can make a difference by voting for appropriate candidates, who believe in the strength of grassroots politics and work for the well being of Goa”, Xavier said.
Convenor of Goa PRI J Santano Rodrigues urged voters to reject party candidates.
