MARGAO: People visiting the beaches for a swim, have complained about the increased presence of jellyfish in the sea and want the government to take action in view of the increasing amount of jellyfish bite incidents.
While most of the complaints were about how their planned swim in the sea was cut short at the sight of the
jellyfish to prevent them from getting stung, those who
have been stung received first aid treatment from the
lifeguards present at the beach or poured vinegar over their skin.
They also gave the example of how dead jellyfish can be seen on the shore, which is giving a bad image about Goa as a top beach destination as there are already tar balls, garbage and the stray dog menace.
Besides visitors to the beach, which includes locals as well as tourists, the local fishermen had also complained about the jellyfish coming in the way of their fishing activity.
They even questioned why the government is not taking measures to curtail the spread of such jellyfish that can harm the people or why the authorities were not even conducting a survey to assess the ground situation given that the number of jellyfish have increased tremendously.
