People’s power forces postal authorities to change ‘GMC Sub-Office’ to South Collectorate Sub-Office

GOACAN appeals to people facing problems to write their complaints in the complaint book in the respective post offices

MARGAO: It was a victory for the people as at last the Gandhi Market Complex (GMC) post office housed at the District Collectorate office was changed to South Goa Collectorate Sub-Office.

GOACAN, which had raised a serious question on the issue in the past, has welcomed the decision of the authorities concerned.

It may be recalled that the postal authorities in their efforts to provide services at the newly launched Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex at Margao, had shut down the Gandhi Market Complex Sub Office and shifted the same by naming it ‘GMC Sub Office’.

This resulted in a lot of confusion, as many senior citizens during their visit mistookit to be an extension counter of Goa Medical College for South Goa. Seeing the distress caused to senior citizens, GOACAN launched a campaign for changing the name.

Roland Martins said that although a formal resolution was passed by the Post Forum of Margao Head Post Office in February 2022, the same was not acted upon by the senior postal officials in Panjim.

GOACAN then intensified its campaign with a formal complaint in the official complaint book of the post office on October 18, 2022, which was blocked by some officials who feared their lethargy could be exposed.

On June 18, 2023 on the occasion of Goa Revolution Day the announcement by GOACAN of its plans to start a mass letter campaign to the PostMaster General (PMG) and to the Members of Parliament demanding the change in the name of the Post Office had its desired effect.

The following memo was issued, in pursuance of orders containing the dated letter No. 1-7/Maharashtra-10/2023-Plg dated July 6, 2023 Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, Mumbai change in name Gandhi Market Complex SO as “South Goa Collectorate SO” under Goa Division.

GOACAN has appealed to the public facing problems at post offices in Goa to write their complaints in the complaint book provided in the respective post offices.
