CURCHOREM: Curchorem police arrested a resident of Morailem-Curchorem Francis Pereira once again for desecration and vandalising a Holy Cross at Kamral-Curchorem on Friday.
According to the police, a former councillor of Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council and local resident of Kamral complained to the police that some unknown person desecrated and vandalised the cross situated along the main Kamral road near the temple on Friday.
Police also informed that Pereira damaged the name plaque displaying the name of a minister and others which was installed on the occasion of inauguration of renovated culvert on Morailem-Kamral road.
After conducting a panchanama and gathering information, police team, led by Avinash Naik, rushed Margao and nabbed the accused and brought him to the Curchorem police station where he was arrested under Section 295 and 427 IPC for desecration and vandalisation of a cross and Section 3 of Prevention of damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act for damaging the name plaque.
A hammer from his van was also attached by the police.
Condemning the incident Curchorem MLA and Power Minister Nilesh Cabral said that such incidents breach peace and harmony and therefore he will write to the central law minister to enact a separate law with harsh punishment for disturbing peace and harmony by repeating such offences again and again under the guise of mental health.
It may be recalled that on July 10 in 2017 many graves, niches and crosses were desecrated and vandalised inside the Guardian Angel church cemetery despite intensified night patrolling by the police on that fateful night and later on July 15 police cracked the case and arrested Pereira.
