PANJIM: “The decision of the Goa Government not to permit new primary schools in, inter-alia, Konkani language will not only prevent Goan parents from initiating primary level instruction to their children in their mother-tongue, but also is directly contradictory to the Government’s Official Language Policy”, Asmitai Pratishthan said.
In a press release, the Pratishthan said, “The Director of Education should realise the need to encourage civil society to set up Konkani medium primary schools, especially because Government has not taken any initiative for setting up Konkani schools after Liberation of Goa. Wherever there is no existing Konkani medium school within 1 km of the newly proposed Konkani school, the new Konkani school should be permitted subject to the usual guidelines”.
Congratulating those who have applied for permissions to set up new primary schools in Konkani, Prof Shyam Verencar, Pratishthan Secretary, urged the concerned institutions and societies to continue their efforts with the Government in the interest of preserving Konkani language and culture.
