Pernem bus stand … an unfulfilled dream

Nine months have passed since the new premises was inaugurated, but work still continues and people have to stand for long hours to catch a bus

It’s been nine months now that Pernem bus stand was inaugurated but is still not completely opened for citizens’ use.
The so called state of the art Pernem bus stand, which was a long awaited dream project of Pernem people, is still lying incomplete even after nine months of inauguration. This project was inaugurated in December 2017 but is only partially opened.
Along with Kadamba buses, few private buses and some private vehicles are currently getting parked at this new site. But the major problem of traffic congestion continues haunting the people of Pernem. Even after having a proper bus stand in place, owners are still parking buses at the old location at the cross junction which is causing inconvenience to people.
The cross junction near Bhagwati Temple Pernem is called as the Pernem bus stand for many years as it has served the people as a bus stand. This location is a cross road junction which connects routes leading towards Maharashtra via Patradevi, Keri, Morjim and Mapusa.
Waiting for passengers to get in the buses, the drivers park their buses at this cross junction for almost 15 to 20 minutes which causes inconvenience to other vehicles passing by. This situation causes traffic congestion, especially during the peak hours and the traffic cell has failed to deploy staff at this point to ease the traffic flow.
Since at present this cross junction is just a bus stop, there is no proper sitting arrangement for the people forcing them to stand for long hours till their bus arrives. Work of this project had commenced in Feb 2014 and was due to be completed by August 2015 but the project was inaugurated in December 2016 but till date the project is still not ready.
According to sources, the project is still not thrown open to public since the exit point is blocked by 3 garment shops whose owners are not ready to vacant the shops and are claiming for compensation or rehabilitation.
The government is yet to find solution to this issue.
