PERNEM: For the past three months, the sanitation workers of the Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) have been left without their salary.
When contacted, PMC chairperson Siddhesh Pednekar said that the municipality does not have the funds at the moment, but assured to pay the workers their salary once the council receives funds.
The locals allege that PMC has projects which can generate revenue, but the civic body is not putting in enough effort in this direction.
They claimed that despite having new hotels and establishments in the municipal area, the municipality has failed to collect the revenue from them.
The Pernem municipality also has a waste treatment plant, which was built spending Rs 4 crore but the same is not yet operational.
Later, GSUDA handed over 8,000 sq metres of land surrounding the waste treatment plant to a Bangalore-based company on lease. The company was given the land to operate a project where fuel could be generated from plastic.
The indoor stadium project at Sawalwada has turned out to be a white elephant and the authorities concerned owe Rs 2 crore to the municipality towards the same.
Meanwhile, despite being unpaid, the sanitation workers have continued their work.
