Pernem civic workers refuse to collect garbage, protest outside PMC office

PERNEM: The garbage collection of weekly Pernem market and surrounding areas came to an abrupt halt on Friday after the workers protested outside the municipality office with brooms over the delay in payment of their wages.

They charged that they were working for so many years here and  their services were neither regularised nor were they given any updates on the Provident Fund (PF) and other deductions.

Later Chairperson Madhav Sinai Desai along with the Chief Officer Anil Rane held discussions with the protesting workers and assured to solve their grievances by Monday.

“We were forced to take this step since our wages were never paid on time. We are daily wage workers and are totally dependent on this income. Sometimes the payment gets delayed for over two months,” said the agitating workers.

Meanwhile the Chairperson said that the payment was delayed as they were waiting for the bills to be cleared.
