MAPUSA/PERNEM: Colvale police on Tuesday detained two persons for illegally extracting sand by using canoe in Chapora River at Pirna, on Tuesday.
The raid was conducted early morning at around 5 am in the presence of Mamlatdar of Bardez Dasharath Gawas, officials of Department of Mines and Minerals and Captain of Ports.
The canoe and sand were also confiscated. The accused persons are identified as Dadan Ramgovind Sahani (50) and Ajay Dinanath Sahani (42), both natives of Uttar Pradesh and seized 08.5 cubic metres of extracted sand worth Rs 11,050.
In the connection, Assistant Geologist of Mines and Mineral Department Shyam Sawant filed a complaint at the Colvale Police Station and acting on the case, the police have registered an offence for committing theft of sand under Section 379 R/W 34 IPC and for Contravention of Rule 3,38 with Rule 62 (1) of the Goa Minor Mineral Concession Rules 1985.
SDPO Mapusa Jivba Dalvi informed Herald, “We had received an information from reliable source that some persons are engaged in illegal sand mining activity in Chapora River at Pirna. Based upon the reliable sources, the raid was conducted and two persons are placed under arrest. Further investigation is in progress.”
Meanwhile, in a raid conducted by Pernem police in presence of Mamlatdar of Pernem Anant Malik at Naibagh, Pernem, four canoes and 30 cubic metres of sand were seized. The seized canoes are handed over to Costal Police while extracted sand was released back into the river.
Pernem police have registered an offence against an unknown person. Further investigation is in progress.
