PERNEM: Pernem fisherwomen have voiced grave concerns about the deteriorating state of their local fish market, particularly its roof and flooring. They demanded urgent action from the relevant authorities to repair the market, citing safety concerns for themselves and their fellow fisherwomen.
Currently, the fish market is in a deplorable condition, which gets worse during the monsoon season. Leaks from broken roof tiles worsen the situation, resulting in flooding of the market floor and causing numerous issues for both the fisherwomen and buyers. The rainwater not only inundates the market but also causes gutters to overflow, affecting the adjacent road.
One fisherwoman, expressing their collective struggle, stated, “We encounter numerous hardships daily. The blocked drains prevent fish water from draining properly, instead causing dirty water to flood back into the market. This makes navigating the market and making purchases extremely challenging.”
The fisherwomen lamented that the market’s dismal state deters many potential customers, leading to decreased sales. They even offered to contribute towards the market’s renovation costs.
Siddesh Pednekar, Chairperson of Pernem Municipal Council, gave assurance that the issue would be promptly addressed.
