Pernem’s Mashelkar garden in dire straits

Recreational place has no lights; there is neither a place to relax nor a place to play; now locked by municipality

PERNEM: Resha Mashelkar garden in Pernem is in a pathetic state has turned into a white elephant with the municipality now locking its gates.

The garden was beautified with much fanfare by the Tourism Department still lack major facilities has not been maintained for reasons best known to the authorities.

The park neither has playing equipment for children nor does it have a washroom or a lawn. The park has no lights after dusk and is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Locals have accused the Pernem Muncipal Council Councillors of only focusing on their personal gains instead of increasing PMC’s revenue.

It can be recalled that the civic body is supposed to receive Rs 1.75 crore for an indoor stadium at Sawalwada.

“It is also a question how much the municipality earns from the garbage treatment plant which was built at a whopping cost of Rs 4 crore,” asked a local Umesh Talawnekar.

Talawnekar also wondered as to why the park meant for recreational activities has been neglected by the government.
