Pernem’s Multipurpose Sports Stadium Sees Change of Plans During National Games

Panjim: The state-of-the-art multipurpose sports stadium in Sawalwada, Pernem, has experienced an unexpected turn of events as the much-anticipated National Games finally make their way to Goa. The grand stadium, constructed at a cost of Rs 43 crore in January 2020, was initially intended to host various events during the National Games, such as handball, weightlifting, and kabaddi. However, today, this impressive facility is serving a different purpose.

Instead of echoing with the cheers and competitions of athletes, the Pernem sports stadium is currently occupied by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. These CISF personnel are entrusted with providing security for the newly established Manohar International Airport at Mopa. While the National Games have commenced, none of the sporting events are scheduled to take place at this stadium.

Efforts have been made over the last six months to explore the possibility of relocating the CISF personnel to enable the hosting of events at Sawalwada. Unfortunately, the relocation wasn’t feasible due to the presence of approximately 600 CISF personnel who are stationed at the stadium.

This unforeseen change has raised questions and concerns among the local community and government officials, as the purpose and use of the Sawalwada stadium during the National Games remain a topic of discussion.

The National Games have brought a mix of anticipation and unexpected twists, making it a remarkable event for Goa’s sporting landscape.
