Perpetual Succour Convent HS revives folk plays for students

MARGAO: Taking serious note of today’s generation being unaware about the importance of the traditions of Goa, the Management of Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim have organized folk plays; popularly known as ‘Zomnivele Fell’ in the school complex for students community on February 20.

Meanwhile, folk plays were also organized for the elderly and senior citizens in the school premises on Sunday, February 19.

Many are of the opinion that this school may be the only one in the whole state of Goa taking initiative in organizing such types of events in the school complex to educate the students on folk plays.

The only aim of organizing the ‘khell’ is to revive the traditional ‘khell’ among the student community who are unaware about its importance. Hence hundreds of students studying in the school will be witnessing the ‘khell’ on Monday February 20.

Sr  Libia Fernandes, Principal of the Perpetual Succour Convent High School, Navelim is the person behind taking initiative to hold this ‘khella partio’ in the school complex, as on Sunday ‘khell’ of Domingo Soares presented his three folk plays especially for the elderly and senior citizens in the school compound.

As informed by the Sr Libia, a ‘traditional khell’ play by well-known director Milagres de Ganapoga will be presented on Monday, February 20, at 8.30 am during the school hours, especially for the school students.

“We have noticed that today’s generation is unaware of the traditional ‘Zomnivelle Khell’. They are aware of only the floats that are being organized during the Carnival but are in darkness pertaining to the tradition of the ‘Zomnivele Khell. And hence, we thought of organizing the ‘khell’ in the school complex so that the students community witnessed the traditional form of art that has been in practice since several decades”, she stated.

She said the aim behind organizing the same is to revive the traditional khell among the kids.

“The culture is changing and the new generation are noticed having no knowledge of the traditions. It is the high time that the student community is made aware of the importance of the traditional festivals”, she stated.

It is pertinent to note that Sr.Libia has also taken initiative to encourage the students of her school on the Tiatr stage. Perpetual High School had participated in the recently concluded 11th Children Tiatr competition organized by the Tiatr Academy (Goa).
