‘Persons impersonating as govt officials threatening tribals’

CANACONA: The Village Panchayat of Poinguinim has filed a written complaint to the Forest Department, Canacona police and local MLA that the forest dwellers living in Marle-Tirval are facing threats from unknown persons who are claiming to be forest or police officials.

The complaint was filed on behalf of the villagers living in the twin villages of Marle and Tirval, which are located in Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.

They said the villagers are threatened by some unknown persons claiming to be government officials, when they go to their fields to do agricultural work, which has caused a hindrance to their field work.

The panchayat expressed fear that in the process, conflicts or unwanted incidents can take place as the villagers who are mostly forest dwellers are living peacefully in the forest since centuries only by undertaking agriculture in the specified areas.

They asked the Range Forest Officer and other authorities to look into the matter to ensure peace in these villages.
