Petitioner, students raise concern over delay of nodal agencies report

MARGAO: Petitioner Royla Fernandes along with the students of Benaulim on Tuesday decided to march to the offices of nodal agencies, Goa State Pollution Control Board and Department of Environment alleging that the concerned authorities have failed to act upon the order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) pertaining to the western bypass project.

Royla raised concern over the delay tactics of the concerned agencies and not responding to the applications made.

Speaking to Herald, she said, “Now, we are left with no other option and hence decided to march to the office of Goa State Pollution Control Board, besides Department of Environment with the students of Benaulim.”

In the order passed on June 22, the NGT has stated that the committee may also undertake a visit to the site as early as possible. However, it was completely ignored during the stretch of heavy rains. At present citizens and especially student community of Benaulim hopes to witness their environment is protected by constructing the Western Bypass on stilts is shattered.

People and students want to know why there is a delay in initiating the procedure, as the committee formed recently is yet to call a meeting and has yet to fix a date of inspection. One month has already passed out of three months given by the NGT.

Reportedly, a few days back Senior Environment Engineer Sanjeev Joglekar said that the meeting is yet to be called to discuss the course of an action plan, and how to go about with regard to NGT’s directions.

He had also admitted that the date for the inspection of the western bypass stretch from Seraulim to Varca which is 2.75 kilometre is not yet fixed. However, Joglekar could not clarify the delay in initiating the process as per the NGT order.
