Phogat case: Nunes, 2 peddlers remanded to judicial custody

MAPUSA:  Edwin Nunes and alleged drug peddlers Dattaprasad Gaonkar and Ramdas Mandrekar have been remanded to seven days of judicial custody in connection with the murder of BJP leader Sonali Phogat.

Nunes and the two peddlers were booked under Section 20(b), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act for allegedly procuring drugs which were administered to the BJP leader at a notorious seafront restaurant, the night she died.

The owner of Curlies, Nunes was arrested after police found drugs in the washroom of his restaurant.

As per sources, the two aides of Phogat, Sukhwinder Singh and Sudhir Sangwan had spiked her drinks with the synthetic drug and administered it to her at Curlies on three occasions.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C V Anand on Thursday alleged that Curlies owner Nunes was one of the six bulk drug suppliers in the country, and charged that the Hyderabad Police had received no help from their Goa counterparts in arresting him.

“We do not know about Sonali Phogat’s investigation and Goa Police have not contacted us about it either. But during our investigation into the sale of drugs in Hyderabad, we came to know that one Priteesh Narayan Borkar was supplying them to consumers,” Hyderabad Police Commissioner C V Anand stated.

Some relatives have alleged that Phogat’s associate Sangwan was eyeing her property.

Phogat has declared brought dead at a private hospital in North Goa on August 23. After initially registering the death due to natural cause, the police added murder charges after the post-mortem revealed multiple blunt force injuries on her body.
