Physician examined in Margao bomb blast case

Nearly 11 months after the city was rocked by a bomb blast on the eve of Diwali festival, trial of the accused in the Margao bomb blast case finally commenced on Thursday, with the South Goa Sessions Court examining a prosecution witness Dr Mandar Kantak who had conducted post mortem on the body of deceased Malgonda Patil and Yogesh Naik.
In another development relating to the sensational case, South Goa Sessions Judge U V Bakre rejected the application made by the four accused persons, Vinay Talekar, Vinayak Patil, Dhananjay Ashtekar and Dilip Mangonkar to house in a single cell in the judicial lock-up.
The much-awaited trial in the bomb blast case started this morning before Sessions judge when the prosecution examined its witness Dr Kantak. Special Public Prosecutor S B Faria, who represented the National Investigating Agency (NIA), said Dr Kantak gave the description of the injuries sustained by the two deceased accused, Malgonda Patil and Yogesh Nailk.
Faria said the second prosecution witness would be examined at the next date of hearing scheduled on September 29.
Meanwhile, Faria told newsmen that the application moved by the four accused to keep them in one cell has been rejected by the court on security grounds.
When asked about the fate of the application moved by the accused persons seeking permission to make call to their relatives, Faria said that question will be decided by the jailor whether it is permissible to allow the accused to make calls under jail rules.
On the question of filing an indictment against the remaining two accused in judicial custody, Prashant Ashtekar and Prashant Juvekar, Faria said the two accused are presently in judicial custody, adding that the NIA would file the indictment against the duo after completing the investigations.
Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the accused persons, Adv Sanjiv Punalikar today moved an application stating that one of the witness has committed a contempt by publishing some article in a section of the media, recently. The application will come up for hearing on September 29.
Meanwhile, the Sessions Court has not yet decided on the application moved by the accused persons for a day-to-day trial of the case. The court is likely to dispose off the application at the next date of hearing.
