CANACONA/MARGAO: A picnic turned tragic for two families hailing from Chicalim and Shimoga-Karnataka on Diwali day, as one person drowned, while two others, including a 13-yr-old boy, went missing and two others were rescued at Rajbag beach, near Cabo-de-Rama in Khola village on Saturday afternoon.
Incidentally, one of the persons missing, who is identified as Mujeebullah Abdul Rehman (27) of Shimoga-Karnataka, had got engaged the previous day and was to be married four months later.
The incident took place when as group of about 10 people, including children, had walked down the plateau to reach Rajbag beach shortly after 1 pm.
Speaking to Herald, some women members of the group informed that an engagement of their girl had taken place with Mujeebullah in their house at Margao barely a day ago and the wedding was scheduled after four months.
Since Mujeebullah was still in town, the family and another family from Chicalim had decided to go for a picnic at Rajbag beach.
While the sea was rough during high tide, someone noticed that one of the boys, Shayan Sayed (10) was caught in the strong waves and was struggling in the water. The boy’s father, Asif Sayed (42) of Chicalim, and Mujeebullah raced towards the sea to rescue him. Shayan’s elder brother, Ayan (13) also entered the sea, probably to rescue his brother.
Moments later, the five people, including Amjad Khan (33) of Shimoga who also joined to rescue others, were found struggling in the sea and were trying desperately to save each other.
