VALPOI: Pissurlem farmers on Sunday demanded with the government and mining companies to resolve all their issues and compensate them for their crop losses for the last three years.

The farmers met Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant at his residence in Sanquelim and submitted a memorandum demanding to resolve their issues immediately otherwise they will stop the ongoing mineral ore transportation from Pissurlem village.

The farmers gave five days ultimatum to the government and mining companies to resolve their issues.

“If the Chief Minister does not take any action then we will stop the ongoing mineral ore transportation from Pissurlem village and will take to the roads for a sit-in protest,” the farmers said.

“We will hold farmers meeting on Monday and discuss the further course of action. The mining companies have failed to provide compensation for our crop losses for the last three years. They have not removed the mud from the fields,” a farmer Tulsidas Gawade said.

After a patient hearing, the Chief Minister assured the farmers that he will immediately inform the concern authority to start pumping out the water from the mining pits and release into the fields.

“I will inform the companies to remove all the mud from the fields,” the Chief Minister assured.

The Chief Minister also said that he will send the Deputy Collector and other officials from the Agriculture Department to the fields for inspections.
