MAPUSA: A delegation of 33 affected workmen and employees of Infrastructure Logistics Mines of Fomento Company located at Pissurlem met Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza on Monday and submitted a memorandum seeking government’s intervention and requested that a suitable advisory be issued to the company against terminating the workers from service and continue paying salaries.
The memorandum states that the company allegedly terminated 33 workers from April 24 and paid a nominal amount as full settlement. Unhappy with the settlement amount and termination, the delegation requested government to intervene.
The delegation informed the minister that the workers have been with the company since 2005 and are dependent on their jobs but following the Supreme Court order banning mining, the company terminated them without prior notice.
The delegation informed that the other mining companies have removed their employees from jobs but were paying monthly salaries. However, in this case, the company had terminated their services and had stopped paying their salaries.
D’Souza said workers were part of the establishment and owners and workers should come together and settle the issue. However, in this case, the company had sacked the employees without prior notice and there is no say of the other party. “I will talk to Chief Secretary and Chief Minister and find out a solution,” he said.
