Plagued by neglect, Canacona Bal Bhavan roof springs leak

CANACONA: The roof of the Canacona Bal Bhavan Kendra building at Char Rasta has begun to leak, inconveniencing young students, and angering their parents. In addition to this, the poorly maintained building lacks essential facilities, prompting demands for immediate repairs.

The parents and children had hoped that the renovation work would be completed before the arrival of the monsoon season. Unfortunately, their expectations took a major hit, much like the roof tiles of the Bal Bhavan.

The poor sanitation in the building has also affected the students, who learn various art forms at the school. Shedding light on its historical background, former chairperson Rajendra Desai explained, “The construction of the school building dates back to 1970. Initially, the centre began a skilled worker training programme based on the Industrial Training Institute (ITI). Subsequently, in 1975, the government established the first higher secondary school in Canacona at the same building.”.

As enrolment increased and the government constructed a separate building for the higher secondary school in Sheler, Vijayadevi Rane, the former chairperson of Bal Bhavan, initiated classes for the Bal Bhavan Kendra in this building. Currently, more than 60 students attend evening sessions to learn various art forms.

Meanwhile, Canacona Municipality chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaonkar assured that the resolution passed during the municipal meeting regarding the building repairs would be forwarded to Bal Bhavan and the Directorate of Education for further action.
