PANJIM: The Directorate of Education has asked heads of government and government aided schools notified as polling booths for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls to identify area/land to plant five saplings each on polling day (May 7).
In a circular sent to heads of all government and government aided primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, Director of Education Shailesh R S Zingde, said, “Each polling station aims to plant minimum five saplings conveying a message of a greener environment and to create awareness towards one’s love for nature.”
The plantation drive will be conducted by the polling team immediately after setting up the polling booth. The maintenance of the saplings at the polling station (schools) will be taken care of by the respective teachers of the school, Zingde said.
The saplings will include medicinal or fruit bearing plants at each polling station located across the State, encompassing 1,725 polling booths in both the districts.
The polling team will reach their allotted booths one day prior to the scheduled date of poll i.e. May 7. The Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will keep the saplings at the respective booth(s) and provide assistance to the polling team to carry out the said plantation drive.
Heads of all government and government-aided schools which are notified as polling, stations for the upcoming general Lok Sabha election are directed to identify the planting area and to clearly demarcate it.
The Election Commission has decided to plant saplings at all the polling stations so as to make a ‘Green Lok Sabha polls’.
On the polling day, the saplings will be given to the first male and female voters to plant it at each polling station.
