MARGAO: Plastic carry bags reappeared in the markets at Margao on Friday as the Margao Municipal Council temporarily suspended its drive against it and vendors seeing that there were no inspections done, pulled out the plastic bags in stock.
The four teams of MMC raided different areas of the town to implement the ban on plastic carry bags by targeting vendors who were giving plastic carry bags to the people. However, for the last two days this drive was suspended so that the officials could attend to their other routine work.
Taking advantage of the absence of the inspectors, vendors in New Market, Gandhi Market and at Khareband brought out the plastic bags in stock and gave them to the customers with the goods they had purchased.
MMC Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai in the afternoon dispatched a team of two officials to inspect the three places and challan anybody found giving plastic bags. Mishra jewelers near Gomant Vidya Niketan was fined for giving plastic carry bags.
In fact it was ironical that while MMC has ordered a ban on plastic local MLA Digambar Kamat used plastic profusely for the inauguration of the cardiac care ambulance where peddas were supplied in plastic bags by Mishra Sweet Mart.
Former Vice Chairperson Doris Teixeira was merrily handing over rose poses wrapped in plastic sheet to all the guests, doctors and councilors present for the function which was again in total violation of the MMC order.
