VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday decided to form a special team to monitor and strictly implement/enforce the plastic ban in Vasco from next week.
According to MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik, a letter has been received from Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida’s office requesting the council to take necessary steps to strictly implement/enforce the plastic ban in Vasco from July 17. In the letter, Almeida has also suggested that the council immediately form a special task force to monitor and take action against any use of plastic in Vasco, so that by January 26 2018, the town can be 100 percent plastic free.
“As requested by the MLA even we intend to make Vasco plastic free by January 26, 2018. Working in the same directions, we have already decided to form a special task force consisting of MMC staff, councillors and police for strict implementation/enforcement of plastic ban in Vasco from next week. Though we have already imposed plastic ban in the MMC jurisdiction and despite MMC issuing fines to the violators, still vendors continue to use plastic bags while delivering goods to the customers and this special task force will be decided for this purpose so that we achieve our deadline successfully,” Naik said.
Commenting on his letter to the MMC, Carlos Almeida said, “Presently we have door-to-door garbage collection in almost all wards. However, there are still certain areas where MMC needs to put in extra efforts. I have therefore requested the council to ensure that these wards be given extra attention so that all 25 wards are covered 100 percent under the door-to- door garbage collection scheme.
Similarly, I have asked the council to focus on garbage segregation at source so that issues related to scientific disposal of waste can be solved and Vasco which has been ranked as number one clean town in state can retain its position” he said.
He said, “With regards to use of plastic, we need to be more strict otherwise our efforts to keep the town clean would not be fruitful as plastic is still been used in the town.”
As assured by the MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik and Chief officer Deepali Naik, I am pretty confident that with joint efforts we will succeed in achieving our aim to make Vasco plastic free by January 26, 2018” he added.
