MARGAO: Those living in the vicinity of the Sonsoddo legacy dump site were upset to find that the plastic sheets covering the Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) kept at Sonsoddo had blown off thereby increasing the risk of the material seeping into the drains of the area, thereby polluting the water and adding to the foul stench.
It may be recalled that RDF is processed from the treated garbage at Sonsodo and it is stored there until it is transported to a factory in Karnataka.
While this operation is handled by Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), the locals urged MMC to take immediate action and restore the plastic covering.
MMC Chief Officer Gaurish Shankhwalkar stated that GWMC had given him an assurance that the necessary work would be done immediately.
Meanwhile, work of putting tarpaulin cover on the roof of MMC’s heritage building in Margao was taken up to stop the leaking of water into the building during the rains.
