PANJIM: Department of Rural Development has written to the Government of India to enhance the minimum wages from the current Rs 240 to Rs 323 under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Guarantee Act (MGNRGA).
“We have written to the Government of India at least three times to enhance the minimum wages under the MGNRGA from the current Rs 240 to at least Rs 323 as of now we have not got any reply. As per the Goa govt, minimum wages rate is Rs 323 but form the centre we receive only Rs 240 per registered job card holder” said Department of Rural Development, Director, Vasudev N Shetye
“In Goa we have almost 37,000 plus registered job card holders under which there are 43,000 men who are there. With Rs 250 minimum wages no one is ready to participate in MGNRGA as in the market those people get more than what they get here, so why will anyone come here” said Shetye
Meanwhile, the Director has said that they are expecting from the Central government to enhance the minimum wages to Rs 323 for which his department is constantly following up the matter with the government.
