Despite being fully aware of the problems envisaged by the general public and street vendors, the authorities including the police and the Sanguem Municipality have failed in bringing any solace to the public and vendors operating at the weekly Wednesday market at Sanguem.
Ever since the operation of the regular Wednesday market at Sanguem about a year ago, people in Sanguem were largely benefitted on account of the concessional rates of goods sold.
People visiting the Wednesday market are happy about the products and the rates at the weekly market.
However, even after having brought to the notice of the Sanguem Municipality and the police, the authorities have failed in bringing a halt to the two and four-wheelers that use the narrow road used by the street vendors to sell their wares at the weekly market.
With the vendors occupying a portion of the narrow internal road, people making purchases can be seen jostling in discomfort. And those using the narrow road with their vehicles make things difficult for those making their weekly purchases, not to mention the safety angle and the risks they face.
It is pertinent to note that when this issue was highlighted by Herald some months ago, police authorities were diverted traffic at the two ends leading to the Wednesday market.
However, now that police have stopped diverting traffic, motorists have once again started using the Wednesday market route much to dismay of the street markets and the general public.
People point out that with alternate route being available, the installation of barricades by the police at the two ends of the road used for Wednesday market would have largely solved the issue of traffic problem faced by the people on Wednesday market.
The people visiting the Wednesday market have also appealed the municipal authorities to take immediate steps in the matter, as they fear that otherwise the Wednesday market, which has been welcomed by the people, may see its slow death.
Meanwhile, the street vendors have also shown great concern of frequent complains being issued to them by the authorities for using the street to sell their wares and have urged for the immediate solution in the matter.
