PONDA: Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has displayed a board of its revised sopo rates in the Ponda municipal market, even as heaps of garbage has accumulated in the market shed over the last four days.
According to the information by vendors, the PMC displayed the board on August 27.
It may be recalled that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had suggested PMC to roll back the hiked sopo rates from Rs 20 to Rs 12 in the shed and from Rs 10 to Rs 6 in the open market. Though PMC displayed the board, it is learnt that many vendors in the shed are not paying sopo tax to the sopo collector.
Meanwhile, heaps of garbage has accumulated in the market shed and Ponda Vendors Committee members, Sumati Naik and Jafar Lalmiya and other vendors, claimed that the garbage has not been collected in the last four days.
“Every year, the garbage was not collected only on Ganesh Chaturthi day, but this time it has remained accumulated since the last four days, Stench is emanating from the heap and PMC should look into it to avoid inconvenience to general public,” said a member.
Though the vendors are not paying the hiked sopo rates and have refused to pay sopo to the contractor, they said that they will pay all the accumulated sopo tax to PMC only at Rs 6 per sq mtr in both the open and shed areas.
