PONDA: Calling upon the Ponda residents to maintain a plastic free town with minimum or no use of plastic in their day-to-day life, Ponda Municipal Council Chairman Venktesh Naik on Wednesday appealed to them to cooperate with the municipality in handling the segregated waste to ensure that plastic is sent to recycling plant.
Speaking on the occasion of “Swatchata Hi Sewa Mission” organised in the municipal hall, Naik said dogs and cattle feast on the leftover food dumped in plastic bags along the roads.
“Earlier, we used take teak tree leaves to buy fish but now the same has been replaced by plastic. If we switch to traditional way and reduce the use of plastic and start using cotton bags then we can minimise the use of plastic. The plastic waste should be handed over to PMC workers at the collection points,” he added.
He said the awareness drive would continue till October 2.
Stating that segregating plastic is a tedious job, he said, “We send around 16 tonnes plastic waste to the recycling plant per month. The government will soon provide replacement for water bottles. Consuming food in plastic containers is harmful as plastic does not decompose and when disposed off generates heat leading to fire incidents.”
“We will start selling cotton bags in the market and conduct raid and impose fines on those vendors using plastic bag,” he said.
Geetali Talavlikar, Anand Naik and Vishant Naik also spoke on plastic awareness.
