PMC to form street vending committee

But market vendors oppose street vending

PONDA: The Ponda Municipality has decided to form a ‘street vending committee’ in next 45 days as per the Street Vending Act of Central Government to implement the law. However, some market vendors are opposed to the idea of street vendors.
Addressing the media here, Municipal Chairman Venktesh Naik said that as per the new law neither the municipality nor the police can remove the street vendors without providing them suitable vending zone.
He said in 2014 a street vending committee was formed; however, it failed to function and did not hold a single meeting. “So, we have decided to form new committee to implement street vending law that will provide vending zone to street vendors. The aim of the Act is provide suitable space to street vendors to earn livelihood. They can’t be removed without providing them alternate place for their business,” he said.
The street vending committee will be comprised of PMC Chairman, police, municipal inspectors, vendors, Deputy Collector, PMC engineers, TCP officials and councillors. The role of this committee is to identify street vendors and provide registration number to them for vending.
