CANACONA: With an eye on the upcoming ZP elections, social worker Reshma Velip from Mhalwada, Poiguinim joined Congress with her supporters in the presence of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar and other office bearers on Saturday.

With the State Election Commission reserving the Poinguinim ZP seat for woman belonging to ST community, the hopes of most of the aspiring candidates got dashed.

However, this reservation of the seat has suddenly brought new claimants to stake their claim for the Congress ticket.

And in such a scenario Reshma Velip, a resident of Mhalwada in Poiguinim, has thrown her hat by joining the Congress with 25 of her supporters on Saturday.

State General Secretary Janaradhan Bhandari told Herald that Velip who is known in Canacona taluka as a social worker joined the Congress in the presence Chodankar, Vice President Sankalp Amonkar, Minority cell in-charge Urfan Mulla, GPYCC Varad Mardolkar, GPMCC Pratima Coutinho, executive member Daya Pagi and State Secretary Mahadev Desai ex-sarpanch Ramdas Pujari.

“Till now three women including Reshma have shown their interest to contest Poiguinim ZP seat on Congress ticket. We will take a decision in coming days,” Bhandari said.
