Poinguinim VP gets tough on liquor smuggling through Marle

CANACONA: Tightening the screws on liquor smuggling through Marle hamlet, Poinguinim Village Panchayat has issued notices to three establishments for operating without trade licences from the local body.

It is pertinent to note that these establishments have licence from the Excise Department under the Goa Excise Acts and Rules, but do not have any permit from other relevant departments.

Poinguinim Sarpanch Savita Tawadkar said notices have been served to the establishments that were operating without a trade licence from the panchayat.

“We had actually resolved six months back to send the notices to such illegal establishments who were operating without permission of the village panchayat,” she said while explaining that the intent is to increase revenue of the panchayat while at the same time ensuring that all businesses are conducted legally.

The panchayat notices asked the respondents to submit proper documents including ownership proof, photograph and plan of the structures, NOC from departments concerned and other relevant documents.

The panchayat swung into action following Canacona Police raids in which alcohol worth Rs 10 lakh was seized last month.
