CANACONA: Accusing the police of carrying out a witch-hunt to harass those Canacona residents protesting police failure to nab the culprits in the rape and murder of Vijaya Pagi, residents alleged that investigating authorities are also creating communal tension by dragging members of different community into the case.
It may be recalled that Canacona police had registered a criminal complaint against 11 persons from Canacona, Tara Kerkar of Vasco and others for using force to enter the cabin of Canacona PI and obstructing the investigation.
Ten of the eleven accused were summoned by the CID Crime Branch at Dona Paula on Thursday for disposition in the case.
On Wednesday, except for Kerkar, all the Canacona residents named in the complaint were in for more shock after they were served with notices under Section 160 Cr PC by CID Crime Branch. The notice stated that they are required for investigation in the rape and murder case.
“From the investigation carried out so far, it appears that you are acquainted with facts and circumstances of this case and could give material evidence in this regard,” states the notice signed by CID CB Dona Paula PI Sudiksha S Naik.
According to sources, all the 10 persons visited the Crime Branch headquarters and recorded their statements.
“Let the police first prove that we had even visited the police station on February 3. We don’t know about others, but the 10 Canacona people summoned by the police have been drawn from different castes and communities, just to create discord among our communities,” said Sameer Naik.
