Mapusa: Calangute police swung into action after newly-elected Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira informed them about a vehicle brazenly dumping garbage and mud out in the open, opposite the Calangute Church late Wednesday night.

The Calangute police team rushed to the spot and caught the driver and owner of Delhi Darbar restaurant, who were allegedly dumping garbage on the roadside, red-handed. They were placed under arrest.

Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira has warned residents and business owners that strict action would be taken against them if caught dumping garbage in open spaces in Calangute village. “Some villagers called me up at 10 pm on Wednesday and complained that a vehicle was dumping garbage near the Calangute Church. Immediately the Calangute police were informed. Police have initiated action under Section 8 of Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act and placed the driver and owner of Delhi Darbar under arrest,” said Sequeira.

“I request the villagers not to dump garbage, debris or mud in the fields or around the church, temples or any open place because it gives a bad name to Calangute and affects tourist footfall. We have to revamp Calangute and see that the village is clean. If such incidents continue, then I will be forced to take the violators straight to either the criminal or civil court of law,” he added.
