PANJIM, OCT 14
The police team is yet to investigate on how the kidnap accused Sameer Sheikh had access to a broken blade piece, he used in an attempt to kill himself in the Children’s Court hall on Wednesday.
Panjim town police has registered a case of attempted suicide but his arrest formalities would be carried out only after a kidnapping case against the alleged accused is complete.
“We will seek his transfer warrant in the attempted suicide case only after the probe in the kidnapping case against him is complete,” said Panjim police inspector Shivram Vaigankar.
The 24-year-old slit his throat with the blade piece after the Court president P V Sawikar remanded the former to judicial custody for kidnapping his four-year-old nephew from Mapusa, on September 15. He was subsequently rushed to the Goa Medical College but discharged soon after medical assistance.
“He attempted suicide because he was frustrated as he expected the Court would release him…We have confiscated the blade and will investigate on how he got an access to the blade, only after seeking his transfer warrant,” the PI said.
The Mumbai-based alleged kidnapper earlier demanded ransom of Rs 50,000 from the child’s grandfather Salim Sheikh. A rag picker by profession, Salim filed a police complaint with Mapusa police station after which a team was formed and dispatched to Mumbai. He was later arrested in a trap laid by the police and brought to Goa.
