He was recently involved in a fracas with locals outside a business premise that he is allegedly running. Atala turned violent and smashed a car after the driver, a teenager, had crashed into the establishment.
Meanwhile, the CBI has completed investigations into his role in the drug nexus case in September 2013 but is yet to file a charge sheet against him. Sources say that investigations revealed that the alleged drug dealer has said that he sold drugs in the coastal belt by paying off the Anti Narcotic Cell after his former friend, Lucky farmhouse uploaded a video on a social networking site in 2008.
In 2011, the present chief minister, Manohar Parrikar, then in opposition, had alleged that the police had helped Atala procure bail, claiming that they had the evidence to prove it. Pointing to written reply placed on the floor of the House Parrikar had argued that Prakash Maitri, who had stood as a witness for Atala, was actually a stock police witness.
“I have preliminary evidence to prove that Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) had arranged for the witness to Atala,” Parrikar is reported to have said. In September this year, the CBI had also filed a supplementary charge sheet before the NDPS Court in Mapusa in the second police-drug peddler nexus case.
